Louise Bessette at the CCA

On May 19th, at 7:30pm, at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Louise Bessette will take part in a concert presented within the framework of a series of four concerts that will explore Québécois, Canadian and international music of the 60s and early 70s. Those concerts are a musical reflection of the exhibition The 60s: Montréal Thinks Big, presented at the CCA from 20 October 2004 to 11 September 2005.

The final concert, taking place on Thursday, May 19, is an homage to the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec. Since its inception in 1966, the SMCQ has presented Québec and Canadian premieres of a vast amount of important repertoire, including works by founding members Gilles Tremblay, Serge Garant and Bruce Mather as well as the major international composers and teachers Olivier Messiaen and Karlheinz Stockhausen. With its mandate to “disseminate and promote contemporary music, both Canadian and international,” no other cultural organization better illustrates the open-minded spirit of Québec in the 1960's.

Louise Bessette will perform works by Bruce Mather (Fantasy, 1964), Gilles Tremblay (Mobile for violin and piano, 1962), Serge Garant (Cage d'oiseau, 1962), as well as an excerpt of Olivier Messiaen's Catalogue d'oiseaux (XIII- Le courlis cendré, 1958). Also on the program are: Adieu für Wolfgang Sebastian Meyer (1967) by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Les clartés de la nuit op. 20 (Nelligan) (1972) by Jacques Hétu, Si les bateaux (1963) by Gilles Vigneault, and finally, Dmitri Shostakovich's String Quartet no. 7 (1960).
